In 1957, my mother became very ill with arthritis in her knees. She could move forward only with the tiniest steps, and was in much pain. Together we visited a well-known spa, where she was treated by a very friendly doctor, however without the slightest success. To her question as to whether she would be able to walk again, he answered: "Why should I lie to you? You will never be able to walk again and ought to get a wheelchair at once."

After the doctor left, as we sat in our room crying in desperation, my gaze fell on the local daily paper and the words "Christian Science" in the notices of church services. Since we had once heard from a friend some fifteen years earlier that Christian Science heals, we decided to try it. We attended a Sunday service, which I strongly disliked, because I had been an atheist for years and could not believe that God is Love. I felt that He sends man evil, leading him into temptation and then punishing him eternally because he succumbs to this evil that He sends.

I also hardly listened to the explanations of the very loving librarian in a Christian Science Reading Room concerning God and man, and the information relating to Mary Baker Eddy and her discovery. I was waiting for her to finally give us a Christian Science prescription that we could present, so I believed, in a special pharmacy. Instead, she gave us the address of a Christian Science practitioner, whom we intended to go to see the next day.
