Behold

Many words in the Authorized Version of the Bible have gone out of everyday use. "Behold" is one of them. "See with the eyes" is one of its meanings.

But one cannot behold ideas in that way. "Behold mathematics!" would have to mean, "Understand what mathematics means; discern the perfection and harmony of its majestic laws and the possibilities for blessing humanity that a knowledge of its laws would unlock."

Where, therefore, we find in the Bible the word "behold," we often find at the same time an open invitation to use those "eyes" that Mary Baker Eddy, the Discoverer and Founder of Christian Science, defines as "Spiritual discernment,—not material but mental." She goes on to remark, "Jesus said, thinking of the outward vision, 'Having eyes, see ye not?' (Mark viii. 18.)" Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, p. 586;
