Old-time recollections take me to Miami, Florida. The doctor there, the only one at the time, was a friend of the family. He said, "I regret I can do no more for your wife. She will pass on very soon." On hearing this I had such thoughts as, "What a strange world! My life companion is to die, and I with three small children am to be left, without anything that can be done."

A neighbor said, "I know a woman who has a book that is said to be helpful in solving problems; I think I can borrow it." She did, and my wife and I read some of it but did not understand it at first. However, it appealed to us, and we procured a copy. The book was Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures by Mary Baker Eddy, and we both studied it diligently, with the result that my wife was completely healed within three months.

That is how Christian Science came into our lives—when we studied that borrowed copy of Science and Health. This was in the year 1900.
