I suffered for several years from nephritis, and later, in addition, a painful inflammation of the bladder. I was in various hospitals. I got better, but after some time the pain became so severe that even morphine injections did not ease it. Because of the many powders and tablets I was taking, my appetite became very poor, and I could scarcely take food any more, so that it was expected that I would die.

At that time I was already acquainted with Christian Science, but I did not yet understand it well. My sister, who knew more of its teachings, urged me to let myself be healed through Christian Science. Also, I had reached the place where I had no more confidence in the doctor and material remedies and was ready to trust God.

I told my husband, who was unacquainted with Science, of my decision. He was astonished at it, and when the doctor made his visit, he said to him: "My wife's gone crazy. Put some sense into her head. She wants to turn to Christian Science and have herself treated by a practitioner."

When the doctor came to me in the room, I said to him immediately: "Doctor, you've taken great pains on behalf of my health, but unfortunately without success. I'm now going to a higher physician, and that's God." I told him as much as I knew of Science, and apparently he, too, had heard of it, for he said to me in leaving, "If you're convinced of it, then do it."

After that I threw all the medicines away. The nurse, whom I had day and night, was immediately offered a weekly nursing position and was therefore not angry at my sudden dismissal of her. The atmosphere was now free from medical thought, and the treatment could begin.

An experienced Christian Scientist came to me and explained some of the teaching, and how I might demonstrate it. The gentleman talked with me some two hours, and afterward I felt so free and happy. Also, the pain had abated. My gratitude was very great. As I was very weak, I cautiously began to live normally.

This all took place in the middle of November, and in December I was able to leave the house to do Christmas shopping.

More than forty years have gone by, and the physical difficulties have never reappeared.
