Some scholars see Jesus' appointment of the twelve apostles as representing his mission to the twelve tribes of Israel, and of the seventy (or seventy–two in some manuscripts) as corresponding to the traditional Hebrew thought of there being seventy (or seventy–two) non–Jewish nations (see Gen., Chap. 10).
