Light for the Scriptures

The inspiration one gains from the Bible depends considerably upon the insight one brings to it. If its historical narratives or its prophetic expositions are viewed with spiritual light, their meanings illumine human thought. But if they are perused, or searched, from a material standpoint, they may do little more than satisfy curiosity.

Christ Jesus warned: "The light of the body is the eye: if therefore thine eye be single, thy whole body shall be full of light. But if thine eye be evil, thy whole body shall be full of darkness."Matt. 6:22, 23;

Christian Science teaches us to heal the sick by discounting the things that cannot be illumined by spiritual sense. Material objects and conditions reflect only the so–called light of material belief. Looking at the universe and its history in this false light, we see people born to die, hatred having as much power as love, deceit having an advantage over truthfulness, disease stronger than health, and death the victor over life. Everything in the material universe is temporal—doomed to be replaced again and again by another material thing that is also doomed. But the light of divine Truth, of Spirit, is reflected only by spiritual realities. These are always timeless, limitless, whole, immortal, perfect, good.
