Christian Science in a Diplomatic Career
At retirement, in 1969, Lord Gore-Booth, GCMG, KCVO, was head of the British diplomatic service. His career spanned thirty-six of this century's most turbulent years in international affairs. He had been Britain's Ambassador to Burma, High Commissioner in India, and a representative of his country in Vienna, Tokyo, Shanghai, and Washington. His title and the initials following his name represent honors for service bestowed by Queen Elizabeth II.
Brought up from childhood on the teachings of the Bible and the Christian Science textbook, Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy, Lord Gore-Booth recalls that at boarding school and at university "one way or another" he stuck to it. "And I think from then on one at no time felt like giving it up. As challenges became greater, one's realization of dependence on it grew stronger."
Your wartime experiences were very demanding, including a period of internment. They came early in your career as a diplomat and early in your life as a Christian Scientist. How did you manage those years metaphysically?
