I would like to express gratitude for two experiences which have served as landmarks in my growth as a student of Christian Science.

The first occurred at the close of my first year of graduate study at an American university. I was in charge of a large residence for first–year men students, many of whom knew I was a Christian Scientist. On a May afternoon I was cycling to class. Just as I passed a group of students I knew, I was thrown headfirst over the handlebars of the bike and landed wrapped around a tree. When I rose, I found I could not move my right hand and arm; they were devoid of sensation. Several acquaintances vigorously encouraged me to go to the student health center for medical attention. Instead, I went into a classroom building to wash up and then went on to class.

An hour later I found my arm was completely useless and paralyzed. I was in the midst of typing my M. A. thesis and needed both hands to type. I also knew the men in the residence were now aware of the incident and of my rejection of medical attention. I felt that Christian Science—or at least my expression of it—was on trial.
