Several years ago I had an experience which graphically showed the value of defending oneself from the fear of accidents.

Another workman and I were preparing a heavy aluminum handrailing for an anodizing process. It was necessary for cleaning purposes to lower the railing by degrees into a large metal tank filled with a highly concentrated caustic solution. This solution was so hot that it caused the railing to gas vigorously. The load was awkward to handle, and in order to lower it more easily, I stepped up onto the edge of the tank, remarking flippantly to another man standing by, "If I fall in, be sure to pull me out." A moment later, in trying to swing the railing out of the hot tank of acid into a water rinse tank, I lost my balance and slipped into the caustic solution with one leg up to the thigh.

I scrambled out of the hot cleaner and jumped into the adjacent water rinse tank. Pulling off my rubber boot, which was still partially filled with the hot solution, I hobbled down the stairs to a small dispatch office, where I called a Christian Science practitioner. She grasped the situation quickly and agreed to help me through prayer in Christian Science.
