During the births and childhood of our three children there have been many opportunities to see that Christian Science really "works."
When our youngest child was still an infant, the doctor who had been present at her birth X-rayed her and found she had what he termed a congenital hip dislocation. I had noticed that one leg was shorter than the other.
We called a Christian Science practitioner whose prayerful treatment had helped many times before. This time it seemed that I needed to make a more conscious individual effort for spiritual growth and demonstration. For about three months no progress was evident. I came to realize that my own fear was hampering the demonstration, because each time I diapered the baby I would avert my eyes so as not to see the material picture. At one point in studying our textbooks, the Bible and Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy, to see the child as a perfect reflection of God, the sentence "I AM THAT I AM" (Ex. 3:14) stood out above all else. These words made the totality of God's creation clear to me; and I knew that everything that exists does so as a part of God's selfhood, as a complete and perfect idea of God. This removed my fear, and I knew that I could look at the baby and see only her perfection, because there was nothing else to see. This proved to be the case. With joy I knew the healing was complete, and the child's condition reflected this. As soon as this new understanding enabled me to look, the dislocation was no longer there to see.
