Many years ago, shortly after my marriage, I became ill with tuberculosis and was advised to take the rest cure. This disease seemed to be hereditary in our family. All during my teens, because I was considered frail, I had carried the fear that I might have this disease.

Our kindly physician told my family that if I did not materially improve he would advise sending me to Arizona. This was the last straw, as I could see nothing but death for myself and my fear was very great.

About that time a dear friend from another city who had experienced healings in Christian Science came to see me and suggested I try it. Her words were, "It can't hurt you and it may heal you." Until then I had heard only criticism of Christian Science, and there was much prejudice to be overcome on the part of my family. However, I asked my husband to contact a Christian Science practitioner. How wonderful were her words that I need not be subject to the false sense of human heredity, that God was a God of Love and did not send sickness and death, and that I did not have to die! She gave me a Christian Science Quarterly and a copy of Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures by Mary Baker Eddy and showed me how to read the Lesson-Sermon from the Bible and Science and Health. The subject for the lesson that week was "Substance." I remember she told me that as a child of God, Spirit, I could embody only the substance of good.
