Are You in the Blessing Business?
The blessing business pays big dividends, but not in coin of the realm. Material returns pale into insignificance before the deepdown satisfaction and happiness that genuine love of our brother brings to thought and experience.
We begin to bless the other fellow when we stop criticizing him either silently or audibly, and instead strive to build him up. We help him most effectively when we try hard to see through and beyond physical appearance and sometimes less than perfect conduct to catch increasingly clearer glimpses of his higher selfhood—the selfhood of man that God creates and sustains as His very own image or reflection.
The blessing business is a real challenge. It is for everyone. False evidence seems to act as a negative force, breaks through our mental defenses, and before we realize it we are criticizing. Idle gossip about others infects our thought and thwarts our good intentions. Through prayerful communion with the divine Mind we can gain the necessary alertness to detect wrong thoughts about man, eject them decisively, and replace them with the truth of man as the perfect idea, or expression, of this Mind.
