As a child I had many advantages, but the most wonderful was the opportunity of attending the Christian Science Sunday School for almost fifteen years. I knew no other method of healing than Christian Science and had no medical immunizations of any kind. All childhood diseases were quickly healed through prayer. Christian Science gave me a great expectancy of good. It helped in my school-work and led to my receiving a music scholarship to a university upon graduation from high school. I had a healing of stage fright, while singing, when I knew that this gift from God was not for self-glorification but to give pleasure to others. I have found it impossible to be frightened when my thought is on giving instead of receiving.
I would like to relate a healing that occurred over twenty years ago, one for which I am extremely grateful. According to the doctors it was a rare skin disease of which they had very little knowledge. There was no known cure. They knew of only one other case, and the patient had not survived. It seemed to affect eyesight and hearing. I was attending college hundreds of miles from home. My friends discovered me lying on my bed in a feverish and semiconscious condition. They immediately took me to a hospital, where the doctors tried every medical means to help me. I was unconscious most of the next four days until my mother arrived and called a Christian Science practitioner. All medication was discontinued, and I received Christian Science absent treatment. The doctors were told I was having Christian Science treatment. From that time I began showing improvement. I became fully conscious and ate normally, and my sight and hearing improved.
The women around me, having heard that I sang, asked me to sing. I sang everything from Christian Science hymns to light opera and felt wonderful. The predictions were that if I lived I would be scarred for life, my hearing and eyesight would be affected, and I would be in the hospital for two months and perhaps back to normal in a year.
