Today's Protest—Prayer

Social analysts find that in the eyes of many drugs have become a kind of negative protest against all that is wrong with life. It would appear that they are thinking in terms of escape, screening out reality and withdrawing into themselves. The problems are great, and a lot of us feel helpless to change things.

Has Christian Science any role to play at this point? Indeed it has. It deals effectively with such concerns. Without a trace of condemnation, Christian Science indicates that escape is weak and, as a form of protest, ineffective, for it simply compounds problems. The Christian Scientist does not seek to escape problems. He confronts them directly, and with the effective tools of his religion he solves them. They are mental, the effects of wrong thinking, and as such can be dealt with mentally and spiritually through prayer in Christian Science.

Mrs. Eddy was keenly aware of the problems of mankind, and she never tried to escape them, even when they confronted her directly. Instead, she tells us that she prayed several times a day with spiritual truths of the scientific religion she discovered and founded, to work out the problems confronting herself and the world. And, of equally great importance, she taught all of us that we can and must do the same thing.
