Space Is No Hindrance to Healing
In every issue of the Christian Science Sentinel there are testimonies from people who have been healed of physical difficulties through Christian Science treatment. Some of these healings have taken place as a result of the writers' own efforts and some through the prayers of practitioners. Some people were present with their practitioners while treatment was given, and some were far distant.
In today's issue, one writer tells of a practitioner praying at her bedside while she was in a coma, with the result that she recovered consciousness and health. Another says, "I decided to ask a Christian Science practitioner for help. The fact that the practitioner was at that time several hundred miles distant did not deter me from making the call, for since we are taught that God is infinite I knew that the effect of Truth expressed anywhere cannot be limited but is all-powerful." The writer goes on to say that as a result of this treatment through prayer he was quickly relieved of a bodily malfunction and restored to health.
The Bible tells us that Christ Jesus sometimes laid his hands on the sick, or touched them, and they recovered. On other occasions he merely spoke to them or to the people nearby, or asked a question that required a response from the patient. And, again, on others, as in the case of the centurion's servant, he restored health without actually being physically present with the invalid. His ability to heal was not dependent on his own personal power or proximity. He once said, "I do nothing of myself," John 8:28; and at another time, "The Father that dwelleth in me, he doeth the works." 14:10; He taught that God, the Father of all, is Spirit, and that man, God's offspring, reflects Spirit's qualities. And he made it clear that it was his reflection of the Father, divine Spirit, that did the healing works, rather than the limited power of a human being independent of God. He knew that it was a spiritual rather than a physical touch that brought relief. And he demonstrated that since Spirit is ever present and all-powerful, space is no barrier to healing through prayer.
