It was very hot and dry in the valley in California where Betty lived. She was glad to have a swimming pool on the ranch.
"When the weather is too warm, like today, I can just float around and cool off," she thought gratefully.
At sundown all the windows and doors of the house were opened to let in the cool evening breeze. Even so, at bedtime the house still seemed as hot as an oven.
