Upon graduating from college I immediately enlisted in the Navy Officer Candidate School program, an experience I was very much looking forward to. However, as the weeks went by, I encountered two stumbling blocks, either of which could have kept me from receiving my commission.

During a qualifying physical examination, it was discovered that my blood pressure was considerably above what it should have been. Secondly, this school had a reputation of being a "pressure cooker." The Christian Science Representative in the Armed Services whom I phoned for help was aware of the reputation of the training program, and he also detected my growing concern, since I had just completed my third unfavorable examination. I was told I had one more chance to qualify before washing out of the program.

In turning my thought from the physical evidence the Representative called my attention to a statement in Science and Health. He also pointed out that this was the only instance of Mrs. Eddy's use of the word "pressure." The statement quoted was (p. 451): "Christian Scientists must live under the constant pressure of the apostolic command to come out from the material world and be separate."
