Signs of the Times

Linda Larson in Freedom Club Bulletin First Congregational Church Los Angeles, California

We have conquered new horizons in outer space; we have advanced rapidly in scientific developments; our physical needs and desires have been met through modern inventions and conveniences. Living in general has become more comfortable while the pace has become much faster. Our spiritual needs . . . Yes, what of our spiritual needs? In the race to make each day and each year easier than the one before, we have allowed our spiritual growth to become stagnant. While we have advanced technically and scientifically, we have allowed our faith to fall by the wayside. It seems we have been running a physical race to outdo ourselves and for what final purpose? What is life for if we neglect the most important aspect of human life, to glorify the Creator of life itself?

[We] are engaged in a battle of ideals—a battle for the thought processes of man. A defeatist attitude at this crucial hour would not only be suicidal, it would also represent a wholesale desertion of our faith in Christ and of obedience to his command to all Christians, "Occupy till I come" (Luke 19:13). Such an attitude would have a paralytic effect by neutralizing Christians who otherwise would be effective fighters.
