No Deadly Thing Shall Hurt You

Christ Jesus' words "If they drink any deadly thing, it shall not hurt them"Mark 16:18; are not an invitation to tempt one's ability by a self-willed or egotistical desire to exhibit one's mastery of material conditions. But, on the other hand, his words do promise protection from harm if through some innocent, or perhaps careless or ignorant, mistake we ingest some poisonous substance.

The immunity promised by the Master may seem incredible to those uninstructed in Christian Science. But when one begins to see that Jesus' mission was to reveal an ever-present, saving Principle, and that his marvelous demonstrations were based on an understanding of this divine Principle, the possibility of protection becomes apparent. Jesus said, "He that believeth on me, the works that I do shall he do also."John 14:12; This promise is for all time.

Christian Science teaches that immunity to danger, whether from poisonous chemicals, harmful synthetic food additives, or, for that matter, from the viruses and germs that are believed to cause disease, depends upon one's mastery of the false belief that matter is living, intelligent, self-acting. This Science insists that all matter, sentient or insentient, is really the subjective phenomenon of limited material thinking. Its so-called laws, then, are only mortally mental beliefs that can be progressively set aside as one awakens from the illusion of material living and finds the truth of his real spiritual selfhood and its inseparable unity with God.
