What Are You Doing?

Often an individual wonders why his work has not brought him the satisfaction, success, and happiness he desires. It may help him to examine his purpose. He may need to change his concept of his work. To realize more productive and prosperous employment, the individual should lift his thought above the immediate human task and gain a better understanding of his own real reason for being.

Christian Science maintains that, in reality, everyone has a high and noble purpose in life. Speaking of man's true purpose, Mrs. Eddy writes in Science and Health: "Man is not made to till the soil. His birthright is dominion, not subjection. He is lord of the belief in earth and heaven,—himself subordinate alone to his Maker. This is the Science of being." Science and Health, pp. 517, 518;

In Science, man is the spiritual image and likeness of God, Spirit. He is not a fallen mortal destined to till the soil of materiality. God is his real employer, and his real reason for being is to reflect God. It is his purpose, then, to glorify God, good, in his activity. As the complete, spiritual manifestation of divine Mind, man testifies to immortality, uninterrupted harmony and wholeness, sinless purity and unerring intelligence. Since God is the source of all good and since it is man's purpose to express good, man has no purpose apart from God.
