A Theology of Life

Christian Science presents a theology of life. It imparts the certainty that man's identity persists beyond the change called death and lives on forever. Man's real selfhood can no more be annihilated than can God, its eternal Principle.

Basing her work on the teaching and demonstration of Christ Jesus, Mrs. Eddy penetrated beyond the evidence of the material senses and discovered the Science of Life. Through many remarkable healings she proved the existence of the living Principle we call God. She writes in Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures: "Because Life is God, Life must be eternal, self-existent. Life is the everlasting I am, the Being who was and is and shall be, whom nothing can erase." Science and Health, pp. 289, 290;

On the other hand, the nineteen-sixties found many theologians presenting a picture of man as wholly terrestrial. To them, eternal life was at best a doubtful hypothesis. This has imposed on many a feeling that human experience is a meaningless enigma, and that death spells total annihilation. This prospect of nonbeing is deeply disturbing, and it underlies much of the unrest, cynicism, and moral decay in current society. To many, the reason for hope and moral rectitude has evaporated, and they are adrift without compass or anchor.
