"Before you try it your way...!"

I once watched two self-appointed "experts" on 16mm movie equipment prepare for a film showing. Although the rented projector was unfamiliar, the "experts" ignored instructions and each vied with the other to operate it his own way. Suddenly there was laughter. They had discovered a brass plate attached to the machine bearing this message from the manufacturer: "Before you try it your way, please try it our way!"

How aware that manufacturer was of the universal urge to ignore instructions and make one's own rules! Why, the temptation is so common that the tempter even suggests being a Christian Scientist on your own terms.

I know. As a newcomer to Science, I wandered unwittingly down many detours to progress, although a practitioner gently implored, in effect, "Before you try it your way, please try it our way."
