Years ago a loving friend told my mother about Christian Science

Years ago a loving friend told my mother about Christian Science. I was enrolled in a Christian Science Sunday School, stayed in that Sunday School until I was twenty, and have always been grateful for the teaching I received there.

After our marriage I found I needed to study and apply Christian Science more faithfully if I wanted to avoid having medical treatment for our three children, since my husband, not a student of Christian Science, was willing that they be cared for according to Science teachings only as long as it produced healing results.

There were many nights when I sat up for hours holding a fretful small child in my arms while I wrestled and prayed over problems of colds, stomachaches, and fevers. At the time of our son's healing of earache, I sat with the suffering child in my arms and resolutely lifted my thought above the problem. I wanted very much to prove that "God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble" (Ps. 46:1). I knew that God had made this child perfect, in His own image and likeness, and that this truth was true right at that moment. I also declared that evil had no power to enter into man's being and cause him to suffer. Above all, I desired to see these truths proved, not to stop the child from crying but to bear witness to the presence and power of God.
