Christian Science Church Center

PROGRESS REPORT No. 31

The Church Center building project bears a direct relationship to The Mother Church's expanding healing activities. The work of the Department of Care, organized in 1965, provides one useful example of this relationship.

Responsible for all of the administrative needs of the Church's worldwide nursing care program, the Department of Care oversees all activities of Christian Science sanatoriums, nursing homes, rest homes, visiting nurse services, private-duty nursing, and nurses training. Under the direction of The Christian Science Board of Directors, this department develops and administers the standards, training programs, and accreditation of these activities.

In 1965, this department replaced the Committee on Care, which earlier had replaced the Committee on Christian Science Nursing Homes. These earlier committees, made up of individuals who had other full-time responsibilities, were ad hoc in nature—that is, they helped meet the immediate need with existing resources. They were not, however, staffed to develop and administer in a centralized manner a comprehensive, long-range care program. A full-time staff was necessary for this specialized and detailed work, and with this staff has come emphasis on modernization of present facilities and practices and the expansion of facilities wherever there is a need.
