The opportunity to test my own faith in God in the face of a severe difficulty came to me a little more than two years ago. While in the garden, I caught my heel on a curbing and fell backward onto a cement driveway. There was evidence of breakage and misplacement, but I managed with great effort to get into the house without anyone being aware of the mishap.

For the next week I remained very quiet, moving about only when absolutely necessary. I read carefully and prayerfully six entire chapters from our textbook, Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy.

During this search for a deeper understanding of God and of my unity with Him, I was impressed one day by a particular statement found on page 415 of the textbook which reads: "To remove the error producing disorder, you must calm and instruct mortal mind with immortal Truth." This I decided to do at once. I began to reason with mortal mind as I might have done with a friend. I spoke of God's allness, of His great love for His creation, and also of the many years during which He had sustained me. Then I pointed out that because of my gratitude I could not resort to material means for healing.
