COIN IN FISH'S MOUTH

Matthew 17:27

Here we sit in this dory;
fishermen, mind you, yet giddy
as children at first little nibble—
"There he is! Snag him!" Did ever
weathered fingers fumble a line
with such excitement? And all
for what? To prove—or better,

disprove—that ridiculous promise,
"Take up the fish that first
cometh up." As much as to tell us
to look for the most where we least
expect. Imagine! But wait—
"In with him! There now, grab him!"
So here he is right in our hands,

subdued, and suddenly so are we
as the silence rings with the promise,
"When thou hast opened his mouth,
thou shalt find"—shalt find, as sure
as if sealed by some sort of law:
DEMAND REVEALS SUPPLY—AT HAND.
And here at hand: one puny
