Having Audience with Spirit

With what ineffable gladness, joy, and, perhaps, awe one would contemplate actual audience with God, Spirit! Yet through Christian Science we can have it here and now. Mrs. Eddy writes: "To enter into the heart of prayer, the door of the erring senses must be closed. Lips must be mute and materialism silent, that man may have audience with Spirit, the divine Principle, Love, which destroys all error." Science and Health, p. 15;

Suppose we come to a room where beautiful music is being played. Only as we go right inside and close the door tightly on noises from outside can we clearly hear what is being played. If we stand on the threshold or leave the door ajar, noises disturb or drown out the harmony of the music. Similarly, we must go rig ht "into the heart of prayer" in order to silence materialism; all physical beliefs, all resentment, all destructive criticism must be left outside. Then only are we able to "have audience with Spirit," see and experience the actual reality of being, "which destroys all error."

Again, even if we are in the room with the door closed, only as we listen intently can we hear and follow the different shades of tone and the blending harmonies of the music. Often we are in a room where a clock strikes regularly, and yet because we are asleep or listening to conversation or engrossed in something else, we do not hear it strike. We must listen to hear what Spirit, divine Principle, Love, is saying to us. Too often we are so busy trying to word a prayer to God full of all our wants that we do not hear what He is telling us!
