Feeding the Hungry Heart

Christ Jesus, quoting the older Scriptures, said, "Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of God."Matt. 4:4 The Master knew better than anyone that man's true selfhood is spiritual and that his real sustenance flows from his unity with God, infinite Love.

However, Jesus did not ignore mortals' apparent need for material food. His perfect understanding of God's limitless selfhood and the nourishment that derives from an understanding of Him enabled the Master to feed thousands of individuals in a way understandable to them—with loaves and fishes. He knew all matter to be mental phenomena, mesmeric illusion, that he could control, heal, or multiply with a word.

Christian Scientists are well aware that now, and in the foreseeable future, mankind will need material food in order to preserve human life. As Jesus did, they themselves moderately partake of this necessary nutriment and do not allow untempered zeal to lead them beyond their present demonstration. Mrs. Eddy writes: "Jesus was no ascetic. He did not fast as did the Baptist's disciples; yet there never lived a man so far removed from appetites and passions as the Nazarene." Science and Health, p. 53;
