The study and application of Christian Science has been a joy...
The study and application of Christian Science has been a joy and blessing to me over the years I have been a student. Many are the healings I have experienced. They include those of asthma, sprained ankle, backache, influenza, and traits of character causing unkindness, quick temper, and criticism. Some of these healings were instantaneous, though others took many weeks of consecrated study before victory was accomplished.
There is one healing I especially wish to relate, that of being overweight, for it seems to be a prevalent belief. For several years, commencing about 1953, I had the privilege of serving at the Christian Science Benevolent Association Sanatorium in San Francisco, California. I worked in the steward's department, handling foods. When I went there, I was very slim, weighing around one hundred and twenty pounds. As the years went by, I kept acquiring weight until I must have gained fifty pounds.
One Sunday morning while preparing for church and struggling with a suit skirt which had become too small, I looked at myself in a long mirror and was most disturbed at what I saw there. But at once I repudiated the picture, recalling Mrs. Eddy's statement in Science and Health (p. 440), "In the presence of the Supreme Lawgiver, standing at the bar of Truth, and in accordance with the divine statutes, I repudiate the false testimony of Personal Sense." Also, her statement (ibid., pp. 476, 477): "Jesus beheld in Science the perfect man, who appeared to him where sinning mortal man appears to mortals. In this perfect man the Saviour saw God's own likeness, and this correct view of man healed the sick."
