Christian Science Church Center PROGRESS REPORT NO. 13

Stacked one sheet on top of another, working papers and correspondence in current files at The Mother Church would make a pile over four miles high. The Office of the Archivist must decide which of these materials should be retained as historical working records of the Church. The Development Consultant's Office, together with the architects for the Church Center, have been planning areas to accommodate the processing, storage, reference, and research facilities of the Archivist's Office.

These activities and facilities, including a library and research rooms, will occupy an entire floor of the new Administration Building. The office design and organization will follow advanced concepts in library and archives planning. To alleviate the destructive effects of light, a good portion of the lighting in the office will be incandescent, the type used in most homes. Modern, soft fluorescent lighting will be standard in the rest of the building. In character with its research and fact-finding function for The Mother Church, the facilities of the Archives will include adequate space for visiting researchers.

Long-term preservation of the material in the Archives is of greatest importance in giving continuity to the work of the Church. Dust is a major cause of discoloration and deterioration of files and historical papers. To combat this, there will be a highly efficient air filtration system in the new Administration Building, which will remove a large percentage of the damaging atmospheric dust particles.
