Things Are Thoughts

Many things that we are conscious of we do not consider to be thoughts. Yet Christian Science points out that we live in a mental world and that material objects are actually the thoughts of mortals, the concepts of a temporal, materialistic consciousness. They are modes of thinking, not substantial creations but mental illusions. Then what we think makes a difference; and we need to watch our thoughts if we would not be deceived by what our physical senses tell us.

In her Miscellaneous Writings Mary Baker Eddy says, "Nothing appears to the physical senses but their own subjective state of thought." Mis., p. 105; And in the same paragraph she continues her explanation: "Destroy the thought of sin, sickness, death, and you destroy their existence. 'Whatsoever a man soweth, that shall he also reap.'" Here Mrs. Eddy reveals the deeply metaphysical meaning of these words of Christ Jesus.

The Master said other things that show the mental nature of matter, as when he declared to his opponents, "A good man out of the good treasure of the heart bringeth forth good things: and an evil man out of the evil treasure bringeth forth evil things." Matt. 12:35;
