The Changing Universe

Mrs. Eddy writes, "Eternal Truth is changing the universe." Science and Health, p. 255; As all Christian Scientists know, this statement was made many years ago. Today we are witnesses to the gathering momentum of this change. Its impact on our lives irretrievably separates our standpoint from many of the values we held to in the past.

People differ in their reactions to this fundamental disturbance. Some think the wind of change can blow too strongly for their comfort. They would welcome a period of respite in which to readjust their thinking. However, it is clear that this unsettled transitional stage is with us now, and humanity will have to consider its deeper implications.

Those who accept the teaching of Christian Science are grateful for the knowledge that a divine influence is at work directing these changes with specific purpose. Whatever the evidence before the material senses, we are assured that it is "eternal Truth" that "is changing the universe." A hymn in the Christian Science Hymnal begins each verse with the words, "Trust the Eternal." Hymn No. 359; This trust in the eternal Truth, God, is a part of all Christian Science practice. For those who, nevertheless, feel that the events of recent years have outstripped their capacity for readjustment, Mrs. Eddy gives these comforting words: "We welcome the increase of knowledge and the end of error, because even human invention must have its day, and we want that day to be succeeded by Christian Science, by divine reality." Science and Health, p. 95;
