The Language of Spirit

The unusual events on the Day of Pentecost are recorded in the Bible in the book of Acts. The account, referring to the apostles, begins: "When the day of Pentecost was fully come, they were all with one accord in one place." Acts 2:1; In later verses we read: "And they were all filled with the Holy Ghost, and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance. ... The multitude came together, and were confounded, because that every man heard them speak in his own language."

This event is sometimes considered from two points of view. One is that the people heard and understood this divine message, each in his own language or in the language of his nationality. The other is that all heard and understood one common language that was some kind of ecstatic utterance of praise.

Christian Science presents still another view, showing this event to be not at all peculiar to the Day of Pentecost but natural and demonstrable through the understanding of this Science. Do we not all gather with one accord in one place for each Christian Science church service and for each Christian Science lecture? Isn't the language or tongue spoken at such gatherings really the language of Spirit? Doesn't everyone hear and comprehend according to his own spiritual understanding, so that the receptive thought is filled?
