As a young girl, I suffered from tuberculosis, and after an operation the medical authorities advised me never to live or work in an industrial area but always to stay in the country or near the seaside if I wanted to keep well. I obeyed implicitly for twenty years, but despite this my health steadily deteriorated. Then I was offered a post in a large industrial city, and I prayed fervently to God to guide me. I accepted the post, although I was fearful of the doctor's prediction.

This decision proved to be the turning point of my life, for soon afterward I was introduced to Christian Science. As I read the textbook, Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy, and began to study the Bible Lessons from the Quarterly, I felt in my heart that I had at last found God.

The opening words of Hymn No. 144 of the Christian Science Hymnal appealed to me very much:
