The Fire That Purifies

Thousands upon thousands of those interested in Christian Science testify to instances wherein the truth of God's love for man, His spiritual offspring, has so stimulated their receptive thought that physical ills have vanished and unfortunate circumstances have been righted, all through spiritualization of their thinking.

Once we have experienced through Christ, Truth, the God-sent assurance of our real capability, with its ascendancy over mortal ills of every name and nature, no lesser state of mind offers comparable satisfaction. The law of our heavenly Father, which requires that we progress even further beyond false belief in mortal limitations, presages advancements yet to be experienced. To the Christian Scientist the basic task is to follow the example of the Saviour, Christ Jesus, in overcoming sin, sickness, and death—the three afflictions of the unreal world of material belief.

The Bible first mentions affliction in the story of Adam and Eve, who symbolize the type of manhood and womanhood that chooses to know both good and evil. Without doubt this allegorical fall of mankind into suffering intends to explain our human experience, to account for what appears to be sinful disobedience to God and its consequences.
