Scott's Ski Weekend
[For children]
A weekend of skiing in the Rockies lay ahead for Scott. The weather forecast predicted sunny, mild days, and the ski area reported excellent ski conditions. Shouts and laughter filled the air as Scott, his family, and friends piled out of the car, clamped on their skis, and began to head over toward the ski lift.
Scott spent the whole first day at the new ski area exploring many unfamiliar slopes. Finally the sun sank low; it was time to make the last run of the day. Scott pushed off down a slope on which he thought he needed extra speed to ski to another slope that would take him to the lodge at the base of the mountain.
While gaining speed down the slope, Scott caught an edge of his ski and fell hard. His knee hurt badly. Soon a ski patrolman came to a quick stop next to Scott, sending a shower of crystals into the air. "Better ride the snowcat to the base of the mountain," he advised. Scott thanked the ski patrolman for his offer but chose to put his skis back on and ski to the lodge.
