Many years ago in South Africa a member of my family, who was only about four years old at the time, became seriously ill. The village doctor was called. After the examination he pronounced that the child was suffering from acute appendicitis and that an emergency operation would have to be performed within an hour if the child was to live.

My mother and father were very fearful and did not know whether to give their consent or not. My grandmother, who was visiting us at that time and who knew something of Christian Science, recommended that they get help in Science. When they learned it was a religion that healed through prayer, they made a long-distance telephone call to the nearest practitioner, who was hundreds of miles away. The doctor was informed that Christian Science help was being given. He made no protest but made it clear that, as he put it, he would have to "wash his hands of the case." However, he asked if he might come and see the child the nex'; morning. This request was granted.

By the next morning the child was completely healed and romping around in the bedroom. The doctor came and examined him twice very thoroughly but could find no trace of the trouble. He gave Christian Science full credit for the healing.
