I am very grateful for all the good our family has enjoyed because of Christian Science. I was blessed by being born into a Christian Science family. I had the privilege of joining The Mother Church before I left the Sunday School. I was a charter member of the Christian Science organization at a state college. Because of a desire to contribute to the services both of this organization and of a branch church that I later joined, I was able to rise and give testimonies even though to material sense I was extremely self-conscious. After having class instruction, I was able to serve as substitute Second Reader for a very short term. Quite a few years later I had the real privilege of serving as Second Reader, and all self-consciousness was healed.
One healing I had was that of a cough. I prayed and studied a great deal. After five months of consecrated study on my part and treatment for me during parts of this time from either my teacher of Christian Science or another practitioner, this cough was overcome. I learned both patience and perseverance. Mrs. Eddy says (Scienceand Health, p. 368), "When fear disappears, the foundation of disease is gone."
Once when she was four years old, our daughter manifested a very high fever. I prayed for her for two days; then I called a practitioner. On the fourth morning the symptoms were such that the thought of scarlet fever came to me. (In accordance with state law I reported the symptoms to the Board of Health.) I called the practitioner again and told her of the child's condition. She came to see us that day and spoke of the perfection of man, created by God. The next day the child was normal, playing with her toys. The fever had completely gone.
