My husband and I had been married for about two years when we were informed by a physician that it was unlikely that we would ever have children. He recommended that we file an application to adopt a child with the authorized agencies in our state. At that time, so we were told by a case worker, only one couple out of about eighty was receiving a child.
The next nine or ten years were a nightmare of interview with agency case workers, physical examinations, and wild-goose chases, running down every possibility for private adoption that well-meaning friends and acquaintances told us about.
At one point during this time it appeared that I was pregnant. This was confirmed by a doctor. In the fifth month he regretfully informed us that he had made a mistake.
