True Function Is Spiritual

In Science and Health, the textbook of Christian Science, Mrs. Eddy makes this statement: "Every function of the real man is governed by the divine Mind." Science and Health, p. 151; Careful study of this sentence opens up fresh and helpful avenues of thought, relating not only to the Science of being but also to our healing work in Christian Science.

Turning to the Bible, we find in the first chapter of Genesis a delineation of the true creation. Man, the climax of creation, is stated as being created in the image and likeness of God. It is with this in view that Christian Science speaks of the real man, not as a material, sinning, Adamic personality, but as the likeness of God, Spirit, Mind.

It follows, then, that since man is spiritual, or the spiritual likeness of God, all his functions must be spiritual. The healing work in Christian Science is based on the understanding of the absolute perfection of God as Spirit and the perfection of man as God's likeness, or expression. Obviously, one cannot rightly think of man as the eternally flawless reflection of Mind and at the same time believe that man is the victim of malfunction. As God's image, man is forever harmonious. This being so, all his functions are harmonious and normal.
