Vital Speeches of the Day

Lynn A. Townsend, President Chrysler Corporation in Vital Speeches of the Day

The young people I know have not kidded each other about how easy it will be to right the wrongs of the world, as some people have before them. They have simply gone to work to do what they can. They want world peace. They want to feed the starving and clothe the naked. They want equal justice for all citizens, better education for their children, and an honest chance for everyone to make a dignified living. These are lofty goals to be sure, and they are not new.

But what is new, and perhaps the most exciting thing we have seen in a long time, is their method of reaching them. They are apparently conducting an honest search for what William James many years ago called "a moral equivalent of war." They believe that somehow the same bravery and selflessness which our young men show in war and combat could be forced to the surface by an organized effort toward these old and lofty goals.
