I first learned of Christian Science in 1956

I first learned of Christian Science in 1956. I had been ill for almost three years with undulant fever, and the doctors told me I would never be completely well again. Finally they gave me no hope of recovery and were prescribing as many as seven tranquilizers a day. I was put on a very strict diet, and there were very few things I was supposed to eat. I weighed only eighty-nine pounds. Many times I thought I was passing on.

One day when my son came to see me I asked him to bring some literature from his home. Among the things he brought was a copy of The Christian Science Journal. I have often wondered why I asked him for something to read, because I was not able to read even the daily newspaper. But I kept the Journal beside me and would leaf through it quite often. The still small voice kept telling me that this was the way and what I needed. My son is not a Christian Scientist; and I do not know where he obtained the Journal, and I do not remember just what article I tried to read.

A few days later I thought the end was near, and I called my husband to my bedside and asked him to telephone a Christian Science church for help. They gave me the names of three practitioners, and we got in touch with one. Within the hour she was with me. I asked her, "Am I going to die?"
