"Leaning on the sustaining infinite"
In Science and Health Mrs. Eddy writes, "To those leaning on the sustaining infinite, to-day is big with blessings." Science and Health, Pref., p. vii; From the day their eyes first looked upon these appealing and comforting words, countless men and women have felt the impelling urge to continue to read this book, with a great longing to know more of "the sustaining infinite.''
Mrs. Eddy has shown us how to lean on God, divine Principle, Love. Over and over again she emphasizes the necessity of looking away from matter with its false claims to reality and power and of relying exclusively on God as the only real and eternal basis of existence.
As we learn to lean on God, we shall find that many of our old reliances may have to be given up, such as human will, dependence on persons, and shifting human policies. Such misplaced confidence often results in heartache and frustration leading to the trials of which Mrs. Eddy writes, "Trials teach mortals not to lean on, a material staff,—a broken reed, which pierces the heart." p. 66;
