Proving that Truth Heals

Any problem presented to mankind can be and should be solved. No discordant condition need remain in one's experience. A Christian Scientist expects normalcy in every aspect of the human experience. When a challenge to his sense of well-being occurs, he turns to his understanding of Truth.

Truth is one of the synonyms given by Mrs. Eddy in her definition of God in the Glossary of Science and Health. Thus, when one "knows the truth," he is actually acknowledging God; he is realizing the omnipotence and omnipresence of the Supreme Being and denying the existence of anything unlike God.

At times an individual may seem unable to solve a problem himself, and so he asks a Christian Science practitioner for help. The practitioner does not heal through any power of his own. It is the truth which he knows and declares that brings the healing.

The practitioner separates his patient from the lies of mortal mind. He refuses to accept any erroneous testimony as real and sees his patient as in reality manifesting all the qualities of Mind, God. He understands that no mortal belief can interfere with the expression of Truth. He sees the mesmerism of fear, pain, and discord for what it really is—nothingness, without power to bind man, without power to cause any effect, without power to resist Truth. He knows that these facts of Truth are never absent from his patient's consciousness.

This is the truth that heals, whether one declares it for himself or asks a practitioner to help him understand it. The complete nothingness of the erroneous claim must be seen. The Christian Scientist does not try to heal a disease or a discord that exists. If it exists, it has a cause or creator. The Bible tells us that God created all things and saw that they were good. Could God, who by His nature knows only perfection, create a discordant effect? If evil has no creator, no cause, where does it come from? The only answer is that it never does exist anywhere except in a mistaken belief.

Along with seeing the unreality of evil, one must acknowledge the almightiness of God. God is. Everything that He creates already is, and He maintains and sustains all. He holds His creation forever in perfect order and harmony. There isn't anything except God and His creation. Each individual idea is a witness to every quality of God. As the emanation of God, this idea reflects all that God includes. Thus man manifests only health, harmony, peace, happiness. There is no error to enter God's kingdom, where man is safe and whole.

These are the facts of being, and they never change. When applied to the human problem, they heal. These all-powerful truths dispel the illusions that would try to bind mortals. They reduce the lies of mortal mind to nothingness—without history, without entity. They are not mere words producing an effect such as that referred to in Jeremiah where we read, "They have healed also the hurt of the daughter of my people slightly, saying, Peace, peace; when there is no peace." Jer. 6:14; When error is seen as nothing and God is understood as All-in-all, healing is accomplished.

People sometimes ask, "How can anybody make such claims when there is so much sickness and inharmony around us?" This question shows why demonstration is vital to Christian Science. The actual proof of healing is the true worth to be placed on our religion. Mrs. Eddy states, "If Christian Science lacked the proof of its goodness and utility, it would destroy itself; for it rests alone on demonstration." Miscellaneous Writings, p. 365;

What more inspiring example can one find than that of Christ Jesus? His three years as a teacher included innumerable healings. His comforting and enlightening teachings give us no mere beautiful philosophy but the priceless gift of proof. What he taught, he applied to the human scene, healing the human body of all ills, raising the human body from death, cleansing the human thought of sin.

His theology is no mere theory. It is a workable Science—the Science of Christ, which each individual can apply now for himself and others. It is available; all we must do is use it.

In her Message to The Mother Church for 1902 Mrs. Eddy writes: "Jesus laid down his life for mankind; what more could he do? Beloved, how much of what he did are we doing? Yet he said, 'The works that I do shall he do.' When this prophecy of the great Teacher is fulfilled we shall have more effective healers and less theorizing; faith without proof loses its life, and it should be buried." '02., p. 18;

Today many healings are being experienced and witnessed by Christian Scientists all over the world. Mrs. Eddy says: "Truth is revealed. It needs only to be practised." Science and Health, p. 174.
