"As one having authority"

Christ Jesus spoke with authority. Mark records that people were amazed at his works, saying, "With authority commandeth he even the unclean spirits, and they do obey him."^{Mark 1:27;} And on another occasion his disciples questioned, "What manner of man is this, that even the wind and the sea obey him?"^4:41; On three occasions he spoke to the dead, and in each case the one spoken to was restored to life.

Christian Science explains that Jesus' authority was his spiritual understanding. He had an intimate acquaintance with the divine Principle of the universe. This Principle is Spirit, God, Love. Though the Master's reasoning ability enabled him to humble the intellectuals of his time, his spiritual understanding was more than intellectuality. It was conscious unity with the source of all ideas.

Christian Science shows us how to gain spiritual understanding with which we, too, can recognize and exercise the dominion that the divine Principle bestows on man, its spiritual idea. Spiritual understanding came to Jesus through the operation of the law of Principle. This law brought forth to mankind an individual whose very birth broke the fetters of material belief. This same law of Principle has brought to mankind in this age the Science of Christ, through which we can gain spiritual understanding. Materialists protest the virgin birth and materialists protest the discovery of Christian Science. From a purely material standpoint neither of these events appears possible. And from a material standpoint one cannot conceive of spiritual understanding.
