Ye are ... a peculiar people (I Pet. 2:9)
The adjective "peculiar" (pekul'yer—first e as in event, u as incube, second e as in maker) derives from the Latin peculiaris, which means "of private property, owned privately, special, extraordinary." The English word means "belonging exclusively or especially to a person or group; ... different from the usual or normal; singular; special." In the present context, the Revised Standard Version suggests, "You are ... God's own people."
Circumspectly (Eph. 5:15)
