A College Student Writes
Overcoming the Butterflies
"Why do I always get the butterflies?" a young teen-ager often asked himself. "Why am I nervous when meeting strangers? Why is it hard to express myself intelligently?"
Soon the teen-ager found not only the answers but also the solution to this common occurrence. Through the teachings of Christian Science he began to realize that he was accepting a false sense of himself, that he was being tricked into believing in a mortal selfhood which was going through a period known as adolescence and was being plagued by such symptoms as self-consciousness, timidity, anxiety, and restlessness.
As he began to progress in his understanding of his true spiritual selfhood as the image or idea of divine Mind, these symptoms began to drop away. By the time he entered college, the situation had entirely changed. He enjoyed meeting strangers and found it easy to talk with them intelligently, fearlessly, lovingly. On several occasions he was called upon to speak in front of large audiences.
