From Error to Angel

Whenever we honestly face an error in our own thinking, the error goes through a reversal process during which it is replaced by an angel message from the divine Mind. This is what happened to Jacob when he faced in his own thought the error which had estranged him from his brother. The Bible says, "There wrestled a man with him until the breaking of the day." Gen. 32:24; As Jacob wrestled on and refused to let go until he had received a blessing from the experience, the error yielded, and in its stead there appeared to him a message of divine Truth waking Jacob to a higher, purer, sense of himself. Then he received a new name—Israel.

Mary Baker Eddy describes this event in detail in "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures." After recounting how Jacob's name was changed, she writes, "Then Jacob questioned his deliverer, 'Tell me, I pray thee, thy name;' but this appellation was withheld, for the messenger was not a corporeal being, but a nameless, incorporeal impartation of divine Love to man, which, to use the word of the Psalmist, restored his Soul,—gave him the spiritual sense of being and rebuked his material sense." Science and Health, pp. 308,309;

Jacob's name was changed. Do we seek a new name, a new outlook, a new selfhood, a genuine rebirth? If so, we shall have our healing, and the angel thought that brings it will also give us a new sense of Life and Love. We shall never think again from the old standpoint. We shall "sing unto the Lord a new song." Ps, 96:1.
