Church Dedications

The Daily Progress, May 21, 1965

The dedication services of First Church of Christ, Scientist, at 1608 Gordon Avenue, will be held Sunday at 11 a.m. and at 4 p.m. Christian Science churches may be dedicated when entirely free of debt. This requirement for the church here was met in January of this year.

The history of this branch church dates back to the autumn of 1920, when a small group of Christian Scientists responded to an advertisement in The Daily Progress calling for interested people to attend a meeting. A committee was formed to secure a hall in which to hold services, and the following Sunday the first service was held in the Odd Fellows Hall. Later, at a business meeting, officers were elected and by-laws drawn up to govern the group. An application was forwarded to The Mother Church, The First Church of Christ. Scientist, in Boston, Massachusetts, asking that the group be recognized as a Christian Science Society. This was granted in January, 1921.
