Activities for the Armed Services

The prospect of combat causes servicemen to think and to come face to face with themselves as never before. They feel a driving urge to answer such difficult and searching questions as, "Why am I fighting?" "Can I justify killing?" "Will I be able to stand up under fire?" Many find their answers to these questions before going overseas, but others who have received departure orders are confused and still do not know what to think.

For these servicemen and for those who are faced with problems of health, supply, separation, and dislocation of families, the Christian Science Ministers for the Armed Services at ports of embarkation and at air terminals in the United States are having many opportunities for service and are meeting urgent needs.

A Minister on the Pacific Coast who has been assisting an increasing number of military personnel on orders to the Far East and Vietnam has followed up his personal interviews with letters and has found this correspondence very rewarding. The replies he has received indicate that his letters are meeting pressing needs for comfort, encouragement, guidance, reform, and healing.
